The\nparticipant was engaged, and several others paid attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat\ndid you expect to get from attending today?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI expected a\nrelevant topic.&nbsp; How did you decide on\ntalking about this topic?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was assigned the\ntopic, sir.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIf\nyou had the job of deciding what topic or topics would be addressed today, what\nwould you suggest?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would suggest that we talk about\nfear in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cAnyone else have any suggestions?\u201d&nbsp;\nMaxine became animated.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven hands went\nup.&nbsp; Then six more.&nbsp; The next fifteen minutes were filled with ideas\nof importance to the group.&nbsp; Maxine\ndecided to focus on one of the suggestions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What causes groups to revolt?&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audience suggested multiple\nreasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Group distrusts the facilitator.<\/li><li>Facilitator dismisses or ignores the group\u2019s\nemotional leaders.<\/li><li>Facilitator suppresses input of the group.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The subsequent discussion spawned numerous ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When you facilitate, check your voice\u2019s &nbsp;tone and tenor.&nbsp; Audiences dislike pretentious\npresenters.&nbsp; Be humble and present facts\nwith a calm voice.<\/li><li>If the audience feels put down and ignored, it\nwill resist any facilitator suggestions.<\/li><li>When there is tension in the room, something is\nwrong.&nbsp; There is no alignment between the\ngroup and the facilitator.&nbsp; <\/li><li>The word \u2018facilitate\u2019 means \u201cto make easy.\u201d&nbsp; If you are uneasy either as the facilitator\nor a member of the group, call for a timeout and check the temperature of the\ngroup.&nbsp; A timeout can lower the\ntemperature.&nbsp; To continue without the\ntimeout can raise the temperature.&nbsp; <\/li><li>When someone begins to object or argue, stop immediately.&nbsp; Allow the person to continue until s\/he is\nverbally exhausted.&nbsp; Then ask anyone in\nthe room if they would like to elaborate on the objection, present a different\npoint of view, or address the group on a subject of their choosing.&nbsp; <\/li><li>Do not argue or criticize with the objector.&nbsp; You are a facilitator, not a debater&nbsp; <\/li><li>Psychiatrist Rudolf Dreikurs was quoted: <ul><li><em>The real issue in ongoing conflict is not about what\nwe think it to be.&nbsp; We argue and differ\nabout sex, money, politics, morality, clean apartments, where to go, what you said,\nwhat I meant, why must I do this or that, and why you should do this.<\/em><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><em>In conflict what the argument is about is RESPECT.<\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Respect is\nmissing when:<\/li><li>My right to\ndecide is being weakened<\/li><li>I feel defeated<\/li><li>I feel powerless<\/li><li>I feel inferior<\/li><li>My status is being\nquestioned<\/li><li>I feel unfairly\ntreated by the other person<\/li><li>My judgment is\nnot being considered<\/li><li>When these feelings are addressed, we gain and\nregain respect.&nbsp;
