{"id":244,"date":"2019-12-17T15:45:41","date_gmt":"2019-12-17T21:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/knowyouraudience.net\/?p=244"},"modified":"2019-12-17T15:49:20","modified_gmt":"2019-12-17T21:49:20","slug":"know-your-self-an-overview-%ef%bb%bf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/knowyouraudience.net\/?p=244","title":{"rendered":"Know Your Self (An Overview) \ufeff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Know thyself is ancient wisdom.&nbsp; <strong>Self<\/strong> is your essential being that distinguishes you from others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Language\nis a significant part of self.&nbsp; Our history forms our personal development.&nbsp; Our early years are instrumental in our\nemotional, intellectual, spiritual, and social development.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Language development is pivotal to\nunderstanding what we experience.&nbsp; As a\nchild, German was spoken in our home and in the homes of our extended\nfamily.&nbsp; We were bilingual.&nbsp; \u201cLow German\u201d was spoken in our home, local\nbarbershop and pool hall.&nbsp; \u201cHigh German\u201d\nwas spoken in Church.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was six, my Father said, \u201cWe can\nno longer speak German outside.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wondered why.&nbsp; \u201cThere is a naughty man in Germany, that\u2019s\nwhy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow can one naughty man do that to\nus?\u201d I asked.&nbsp; I don\u2019t remember the\nanswer.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I still often speak German.&nbsp; Language is formative and culturally\ninstructive.&nbsp; I learned later that the\nnaughty man was Hitler who used language to influence an entire nation.&nbsp; Language is powerful.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;If\nyou and your audience do not speak the same native language, find a common language\nthat you both understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your \u2018self\u2019 has power in the language\nyou know and use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Language, gestures, name signing,\ndominant emotions, spiritual and political insights all trigger our default\nbehaviors.&nbsp; Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Someone cuts you off on the road,\nnearly hitting you.&nbsp; You immediately\nrespond to that driver verbally or with a hand gesture. That\u2019s your default.<\/li><li>Someone brings up the word\nabortion.&nbsp; You have an immediate visceral\nresponse.&nbsp; That\u2019s your default.<\/li><li>You are complimented.&nbsp; Your response verbally or behaviorally is\nimmediate.&nbsp; That\u2019s your default.<\/li><li>You put on your shoes.&nbsp; Which one is usually first on your foot?&nbsp;&nbsp; That\u2019s your default.<\/li><li>You complete signing of a check or\ncredit card statement.&nbsp; Right or left\nhand?&nbsp; That\u2019s your default.<\/li><li>You are asked to change political\nparties; your unexamined default?<\/li><li>You are charged with being unfair or\nlying.&nbsp; Your response?&nbsp; Your arms and hands?&nbsp; Your words?<\/li><li>When dining, you cut your meat with the\nknife in what hand?&nbsp;&nbsp; That\u2019s your\ndefault.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your defaults can change.&nbsp; It\u2019s a matter of intention, motivation, and\nneed.&nbsp; What defaults serve you well?&nbsp; What defaults cause confusion?&nbsp; What defaults are so habitual that others\npredict your response?&nbsp; Surprise\nyourself.&nbsp; Practice new ways of\nresponding.&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Know thyself is ancient wisdom.&nbsp; Self is your essential being that distinguishes you from others.
