{"id":70,"date":"2019-10-16T15:42:29","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T20:42:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/knowyouraudience.net\/?p=70"},"modified":"2019-12-07T16:28:14","modified_gmt":"2019-12-07T22:28:14","slug":"opening-the-door","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/knowyouraudience.net\/?p=70","title":{"rendered":"Opening the Door to Challenging Discussions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It can happen in families.&nbsp;\nAnd it does.&nbsp; It can happen in\nclubs, and it does.&nbsp; It can happen in\nchurches, and it does.&nbsp; It can happen in\ngovernments, and it does.&nbsp; It\u2019s\neverywhere.&nbsp; What is IT?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is holding non-negotiable positions.&nbsp; If I\u2019m right, you must be wrong.&nbsp; That\u2019s the recipe for being and remaining\nstuck.&nbsp; It leads to conflict, hurt, even\nwar.&nbsp; And the way out is not that\ndifficult.&nbsp; In fact, it\u2019s quite simple.&nbsp; It begins with internalizing several scripts\nthat open minds and make hard positions soft.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Memorize the following scripts until they seem natural and\nnot hollow lines.&nbsp; Invite a friend to\njoin you in a mock debate or intense discussion of specific problems and\/or\nissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cYou may be right.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cOur feelings help define problems and our minds\nsolve them.&nbsp; So, let\u2019s start by sharing\nour feelings which will help us define the issues.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cThere are often several sides to every story\nand issue, so let\u2019s put every side on the table.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cI like what I hear, and it will help us come to\na satisfactory conclusion.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cWe all have something to gain from a successful\nnegotiation.&nbsp; Let\u2019s lay aside any\ndiscussion of win\/win or win\/lose and talk about what we both have to gain\ninstead.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is step one in any serious discussion.&nbsp; Remember to keep the tone of your voice calm and non-threatening without any hint of anger.&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It can happen in families.&nbsp; And it does.&nbsp; It can happen in clubs, and it does.&nbsp; It can happen in churches, and it does.&nbsp; It can happen in governments, and it does.&nbsp; It\u2019s everywhere.&nbsp; What is IT?
